NGI Recipient: Kim Kogut

Session Attended: CDS Boston Centre - Swing into Summer (2021)

The people of Pinewoods are some of the most kind and accepting people I have had the pleasure of meeting. Despite being a complete stranger to folk music and dancing in general, I was made to feel welcome throughout the entirety of my weekend at Swing Into Summer. I admit upon arriving I had a rocky start; I felt insecure, of both my social and dance abilities. I had never folk danced before Pinewoods, and in the handful of times I had danced in the past, my movements were unconfident as they were uncoordinated.

After being intimidated off the dance floor at Friday night’s first Contra (due to my own feelings of inadequacy; not due to anyone else’s behaviors), I was almost convinced I wouldn’t dance the rest of the weekend. But I was comforted and assured by several people while I was at camp. Some offered their company when I was unsure of how to insert myself socially. Others were willing to privately instruct me through some basic Contra moves so I would be more prepared for group dances.

Slowly, I began picking up the steps, and catching myself smiling with every correct turn and twirl I made. By Saturday, I was told that my skills had improved. By Sunday evening, I felt a sense of belonging. I had forged some new friendships and gained a skill I don’t think I would have otherwise learned. I can confidently say I would consider not only attending Pinewoods again, but also participating in my local Contra scene as well. I am immensely glad that I put myself out of my comfort zone through this experience, and hope to visit this beautiful location again next year.
